If Mrs. Buffett's frugality reported below is true she ought to be ashamed of herself. The former Astrid Menks is married to one of the world's greatest investors with an estimated net worth of a staggering $144 billion.
The report states she was taken aback at the $4.00 price for a cup of coffee. So far, she has not complained about the price of over $18.00 per pound for a box of SEE'S candy. Her husband's company, Berkshire Hathaway, has owned SEE'S Candy since 1972 and has steadily increased prices to the point where they are now extortionate even to a chocaholic like me.
I happen to know Astrid. During the late 1970s she was my favorite waitress at the French Cafe in Omaha's Old Market district. I often used to take my girlfriends there in an effort to impress them. It was a time in my life when I lived in greatly seduced circumstances.
Apparently, she met Warren Buffett at the French Cafe who, it has been said, tips 15%. My tips always exceeded that amount to the extent that the accumulated sum would now allow Astrid to comfortably afford $4.00 for a cup of coffee.
For decades personal expenditure has been irrelevant to her and her husband, so I was shocked and disappointed that she would be upset about the price of a cup of coffee. Apart from having to see Warren naked Astrid is the luckiest woman in the world, but she seems to have forgotten that.
