This is a huge mistake. It makes it look as if President Trump is conceptually adrift about who can be trusted as a reliable and faithful ally in the Middle East.
Surely, it can't be the Qataris who have been playing a double game for decades.
Someone noted that they have been acting as both arsonist and firefighter in the region. This has left them with their hands drenched not only with American and Israeli blood but also with the blood of many Saudis. Saudi Arabia condemned the Qataris and, along with several other Arab countries, imposed a blockade on them in 2017.
These Arab countries understand something that President Trump does not understand, or for reasons best known to himself he fails to acknowledge, which is to say the Qataris are no good. At best, they are perfidious allies and at worst they are lethally treacherous.
Now, he has committed the United States to protecting a country that for over 30 years has been using its vast wealth to seduce our institutions, undermine the democratic liberal values of our universities, subvert a raft of politicians worldwide and finance the verminous Islamic killers of Hamas.
Al Udeid Air Base, our biggest military base in the Middle East, is in Qatar which should make the Qataris feel safe enough. Why issue such a public security guarantee to them unless it is to prevent Israel from justly eliminating the murdering Hamas leadership who enjoy the lavish hospitality and protection of Qatar’s skillfully duplicitous emir?
The time for the Qataris to stop using the subterfuge of altruism to undo our Judeo/Christian civilized order in favor of Islamic totalitarianism is long overdue as is the time to hold them to account. Note to President Trump: this is best done when not in a prostrate position.
